Although many high-profile NBA players will not take part due to injury for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games that will be held in London, Team USA is still fielding a formidable lineup, as “ESPN.com” has revealed the finalized roster for the men’s basketball squad. According to the report, the following players (listed in alphabetical order) have made the roster: Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Tyson Chandler, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin,James Harden, Andre Iguodala, LeBron James, Kevin Love, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and Deron Williams.
The squad will be looking to defend their Gold Medal that the team won during the 2008 games that were held in Beijing. Jerry Colangelo, the Chairman of USA Basketball released a statement about the roster that was chosen to represent our nation. He said “We projected we would have difficulty getting down to a roster of 12, regardless of the number of injuries that have taken place, because they are such an outstanding group of people and athletes. The final selections keep us in concert with our game plan to have athleticism, versatility and strong depth on our roster. I think our final roster epitomizes all of that.”
The team only has one “true center” on the roster in Tyson Chandler, although Love and Griffin can man the pivot position. The squad does have three of the best point guards playing in the Association in Paul, Westbrook and Williams as well as the two most talented small forwards in Kevin Durant and LeBron James.
Team USA is part of Group A in the games and they will play their first contest of the Olympics on Sunday July 29, as they take on Team France. The French squad will most likely be shorthanded as well due to the injury of point guard Tony Parker in an altercation at a night spot last month.
