Last Friday we learned that Tom Benson will become the new Team Owner of the New Orleans Hornets; pending approval by the Association’s Board Of Governors; a move that insures that the franchise will remain in the Crescent City. According to a report from “NBA.com” on Monday; the Association is so pleased that the 83-year-old owner of the New Orleans Saints will be the club’s new owner that their sources have informed the website that the NBA will award the 2014 NBA All-Star Game to the “Big Easy” as a sign of gratitude to Benson and the city.
NBA Commissioner David Stern who was in New Orleans on Monday to make a formal announcement that Benson would become the new owner of the franchise; had previously stated that the city would be awarded an All-Star weekend once the club had a new owner. The Association has owned the team since purchasing it from former Owner George Shinn in December of 2010.
The city’s biggest event; Mardi-Gras takes place on March 4, in 2014, so it will not be a conflict with All-Star Weekend events. The Mardi-Gras celebration will be held in February in 2015 and 2016, which would mean the next possible scheduling for the NBA showcase event in the city would not have been until 2017.
