The Boston Celtics shot 50% (37-74) from the field while their All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo racked up a triple-double with 18 points and the Celtics won their second straight contest on Sunday night as they beat the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center 94-86. The Celtics had a double-digit lead at the half and coasted on their cushion for the final two quarters; Kevin Garnett led all players with 24 points in the victory. The Wizards fell to 0-4 in front of their home crowd as John Wall led the club with 19 points while his mate in the back-court supplied 18 points for the night.
Boston jumped on top early grabbing a ten point advantage as Ray Allen drained a 25 foot trey with 4:50 remaining; putting his team ahead 19-9. Brandon Bass connected on an outside jumper with nine seconds to play and the Celtics would end the period on top 28-17. Washington would get within seven points of their opponents about midway through the second, but then the visitors would soon pull ahead once again leaving the Wizards in the dust. As the game reached the half Boston had the upper hand with the score 51-34.
The Wizards recovered their shooting touch in the second half; however it was far too little and far too late. They would cut their deficit down at the conclusion of the third to 73-60. They never were a threat in the final 12 minutes of play as they finally got within single digits on the last shot of the game as Nick Young hit an outside shot with five seconds left to play.
Garnett and Rondo both had their strongest performances of the young campaign on Sunday night. Garnett had a game high 24 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and a steal while Rondo scored 18 points, dished off 14 assists, grabbed 11 boards and 1 steal in the win. Allen added 13 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Wall knocked down 19 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal while Young had 18 points, 2 rebounds, an assist and a steal. JaVale McGee recorded a double-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocks, 1 assist and 1 steal while Andray Blatche chipped in 10 points, 3 rebounds and 1 block for the night. Boston now at 2-3 will host the 0-4 Wizards at the “New Garden” in Boston on Monday night.
