Dallas Mavericks fans finally got to see their club raise their Championship banner to the rafter of the American Airlines Center as the Mavericks hosted the Miami Heat on Sunday afternoon to start the NBA campaign. Unfortunately for those fans that would be the highlight of the day; as the Heat came out with guns blazing in the first half and roasted the Mavericks by the score of 105-94. The final score appears a lot closer than the game actually was as the final 12 minutes of play was just extended garbage time. LeBron James, who could not get it done against Dallas in the Finals came through big time recording a double-double with a game high 37 points in the victory.
Jason Terry came off the bench with 23 points for the defending Champs while Dirk Nowitzki added 21 more; but it was not enough to come back from the spanking that Miami put on the club in the first half. The Mavericks had a “new-look” starting five with former reserve Brendan Haywood now in the pivot and veteran Vince Carter starting in the two-slot.
The Heat came out in the opening period looking in mid-season form; while Dallas appeared as if they needed a map to find the basket in their own arena. This would result in the Heat holding a 32-17 advantage heading into the second. Things would not get much brighter for the home club in the next quarter as James sunk a pair at the line with ten seconds remaining putting his team ahead 62-41 as the contest reached the half.
Any hopes that the Mavericks would stage a comeback were quickly dashed in the third and Miami would be on top 97-65 at the end of the period. The Heat would score just eight points in the final 12 minutes of the game and still won by double-digits.
James had a double-double with 37 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Dwyane Wade was the only other member of the team in double figures as he scored 26 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, a block and a steal.
Terry knocked down 23 points, 3 assists, 2 steals and a rebound while Nowitzki scored 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Shawn Marion added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists while Delonte West came in off the pine and chipped in 10 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. Miami now 1-0 will host the Celtics on Tuesday while Dallas will host the Nuggets Monday night.
