The “Atlanta Journal-Constitution” has reported that according to sources close to the team, the Atlanta Hawks and their home Phillips Arena are on the verge of being sold to a Southern California pizza chain owner. The report states that the current owners of the club led by Bruce Levenson and Michael Gearon Jr. will sell the team and the arena to California businessman Alex Meruelo. Meruelo, is a land-developer as well as owning La Pizza Loca, a chain with over 50 locations in Southern California.
The Hawks could announce the sale as soon as Monday; of course any deal for the franchise would have to first be approved by the other team owners in the Association. The team’s current owners recently sold their NHL club the Atlanta Thrashers, to a group that will relocate the team to Winnipeg. According to the report, Meruelo intends to keep the Hawks playing in Atlanta.
