Over the last few seasons Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Dwane Casey’s name has come up repeatedly when ever there has been a coaching vacancy in the Association. Apparently no team in the NBA thought he was a good fit; however according to a report from “DallasNews.com” Casey has landed his first head coaching position as their sources state that the Toronto Raptors will name him as their next bench boss. The Mavericks assistant and the club have reportedly reached an agreement in principle and the Raptors could introduce him as their new coach as early as Tuesday.
Casey replaces former coach Jay Triano who has been reassigned as a consultant to Toronto Team President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo. Casey was part of the coaching staff that helped Dallas win their first NBA Title earlier this month and his specialty is defense. As the Los Angeles Lakers showed with the hiring of former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown to be their new bench boss; teams in the Association are starting to realize how important defense is. Offense puts people in the seats and gets you on SportsCenter however defense wins Championships.
The Raptors are a long way from contending for an NBA Title any time soon as they finished the regular season with a record of 22-60. Toronto lost Chris Bosh to Free Agency last summer as he is now a member of the Miami Heat. Colangelo has also made some bad trades and some terrible signings of Free Agents over the last few years. Casey will have his work cut out for him in his new gig.
