The Dallas Mavericks after leading the entire second half suddenly found themselves trailing by four points after a 9-0 run by the Miami Heat in game five of the Eastern Conference Finals. Dallas allowed Miami to exploit the inside game during that drive as the Heat made layup after layup without the Mavericks able to stop them. It appeared that the Mavericks had run out of gas and they would head back to Miami for game six trailing 3-2. The Mavericks though took the contest over down the stretch as they outscored the Heat 17-4 and won the pivotal game five 112-103.
Once again Dirk Nowitzki led the charge for Dallas as he went 9-18 from the floor, 1-1 from outside the arc and 10-10 from the charity stripe knocking down a game high 29 points. However, the real key to the Mavericks getting the victory was the three pointing shooting by the team as they hit an amazing 68.4% (13-19) from outside the arc. Jason “The Jet” Terry was flying high coming off the bench with 21 points while four of the five starters for Dallas scored in double-figures.
Dwyane Wade scored 23 for Miami while Chris Bosh had a double-double with 19 points and LeBron James racked up a triple-double with 17 points coming off his lackluster performance in game four. James would only score two points in the final 12 minutes of play. After dominating as they took the lead in the final period they fell apart in the closing minutes of the game as turnovers plagued them.
Both teams came out of the gate shooting well in the first period. Mario Chalmers threw up a 40 foot trey at the buzzer that somehow found the hoop and Miami would hold the lead at the conclusion of the quarter 31-30. The Heat would maintain the lead for most of the second until the closing minutes as the Mavericks got momentum on their side. Nowitzki drained a mid-range jumper with three seconds to play and Dallas held the advantage as the game reached the half with the score 60-57.
The Mavericks held onto the edge throughout the entire third pulling ahead by as many as nine points and would be on top 84-79 at the end of the quarter. Dallas started the fourth surging ahead again but the Heat started to take advantage of the lack of defense the home team played inside and would grab the lead at 99-95 when D-Wade buried a trey with 4:37 left in the contest. The Mavericks were looking shaky but then they recovered their outside shooting and took the game over with a barrage of treys. They would go on a 17-4 run and win the game handily.
Nowitzki had a game high 29 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Terry came off the bench with 21 points, six assists and 4 rebounds while Jose Juan Barea added 17 points, 5 assists and 2 rebounds. Jason Kidd scored 13 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and a block and the “X-Factor” center Tyson Chandler chipped in 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal.
Wade had 23 points, 8 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Bosh put up 19 points, 10 rebounds, an assist and a block while James had a triple-double with 17 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds and a block. Chalmers came off the bench with 15 points while Udonis Haslem came off the pine with 10 points for the night. The series moves back to Miami for game six on Sunday with Dallas leading the series for the first time at 3-2.
