Covering the NBA since 1995, I have reported on my share of strange stories over the years. However the report emanating from Dallas courtesy of “ESPN.com” is truly the first of its kind that has occurred in my career. Back on October 19, Dallas Mavericks sixth man shooting guard Jason Terry got a tattoo of the Larry O’Brien trophy on the inside of his right bicep to help inspire his team to win the NBA Title this season. Sunday at their final practice before heading to Miami, Terry told reporters that if the Mavericks lose the NBA Finals to the Miami Heat he will have the tattoo removed.Terry told reporters “I definitely know that it will hurt worse if I have to take this thing off than it did putting it on. I’m very superstitious.”
The 33-year old veteran was asked by the media what prompted him to get the NBA Championship Trophy as part of his collection of body art. Terry responded “It just symbolized the fact that we had a realistic shot of getting here. If I didn’t think we had a chance, I wouldn’t have put it there.”
The Dallas guard is not discouraged that the Heat are favored to beat the Mavericks in the Finals, which would be a repeat of their last meeting in the Finals in 2006. Terry told reporters “Everybody knows that they’re picking Miami to win. We know that. It really doesn’t matter to us. We know we’re very focused right now. We know what the job is and we know how we have to get it done.”
The Finals begin Tuesday as the Heat will host the first two games at American Airlines Arena.
