After playing two straight games that went to overtime before they were decided the Oklahoma City Thunder beat on the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday night like Ricky Ricardo used to bang on the congas as they won game five of their second round series 99-72. The Thunder held Memphis to an embarrassing 35.9% (28-78) from the floor as the Grizzlies scored in just the teens in three of the four quarters. Only Marc Gasol reached double figures for Memphis as he led the team with 15. Oklahoma City came out shaky in the first but seemed to enjoy being in their home arena more and more as the game progressed. Kevin Durant led all players with 19 points for the night while Daequan Cook came off the bench and added 18 as his team took a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Semi-Finals match-up.
Both teams appeared to still be recovering from the triple-overtime contest that they played on Monday night in the first period as both squads looked dazed and confused. James Harden drained a 25 foot trey with one second left and the game would be knotted up at 17-17 as the quarter came to an end. The contest would remain close for a good part of the second until Oklahoma City would go on a 16-4 run to end the period. As the two teams left the floor when the game reached the half the Thunder held a 46-35 advantage.
If the Grizzlies had any hopes of getting back into the game when they came back in the third they were quickly dashed as Oklahoma City dominated the entire period. Nick Collison tipped in a shot for the Thunder with 33 seconds left in the quarter putting his club on top 71-52 at the end of the period. Memphis would not be a factor in the final 12 minutes of play as the Thunder would win the game in a rout.
Durant scored 19 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks while Cook came off the bench with 18 points, 2 rebounds and a steal. Russell Westbrook had 11 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and a steal while Nazr Mohammed added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
Marc Gasol was the only player for the Grizzlies in double figures as he scored 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks and had 1 assist. The action moves back to Memphis for game six of the series which will be played on Friday.
