The Memphis Grizzlies shot a scorching 52.1% (38-73) from the floor led by veteran Zach Randolph who racked up a double-double with a game high 31 points as they topped the San Antonio Spurs 99-91 at the Fed-Ex Forum. The win completes the upset giving the eighth seeded Grizzlies the series victory over the number one seed in the Western Conference by a 4-2 margin. Memphis becomes only the second team holding the eighth spot to beat the number one seed in a seven game series in the history of the Association. Tony Parker led the way for the Spurs with 23 points in the contest while Manu Ginobili added 16 more in the loss.
The Spurs after dominating the NBA for most of the campaign struggled over the last couple of weeks of the regular season. The Lakers had cut San Antonio’s once mighty lead in the West to just a game and a half before Los Angeles hit a pothole and went 5-5 in their final 10 games. Memphis came out without any fear in the opening game of the match-up and won the contest in the Spurs house; sending them a message that they would have a battle on their hands. Friday night the Grizzlies ended that battle with a dagger to the Spurs chest.
San Antonio apparently left their offense in the locker room during the first 12 minutes of play as they could muster just 16 points in the period. Greivis Vasquez drove the lane putting the ball up and in with 58 seconds remaining and Memphis had the advantage at 24-16 the conclusion of the quarter. The Spurs recovered their ability to put the ball in the basket during the second. However they would still trail 46-43 as the two clubs headed to their locker rooms at the half.
The Grizzlies would lead by seven points before Ginobili unleashed a 49 foot trey at the third quarter buzzer cutting the Memphis lead to 70-66. With 4:39 left to play veteran Antonio McDyess connected on an outside jump shot putting San Antonio ahead 80-79. But the Spurs lead would be short-lived as the Grizzlies scored the next eight points and would hold on to win the game and the first round series.
Randolph scored 31 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal while Marc Gasol recorded a double-double with 12 points, 13 boards, 2 blocks and an assist. Tony Allen had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists and 1 block while Vasquez came off the bench and added 11 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Parker knocked down 23 points, 4 assists and 1 rebound while Ginobili had 16 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. Tim Duncan ended his season with a double-double scoring 12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and a steal while McDyess chipped in 10 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. Memphis will match-up in the second round against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
