Brandon Roy looked as if his knees were feeling fantastic Saturday night as the Portland Trail Blazers guard knocked down a game high 24 points and was the key component in bringing his team back from a double digit deficit in the third to beat the Dallas Mavericks at the Rose Garden 84-82. The shooting guard scored 18 points in the final 12 minutes to carry his club past their opponents. Roy is playing off the bench due to mid-season knee surgery but he looked like he was in perfect health in this contest. LaMarcus Aldridge added 18 points in the Portland victory as the seven game series is now knotted up at 2-2. Dirk Nowitzki had 20 points for Dallas but got far too little help from his teammates to avoid the loss.
Neither team looked impressive during the opening period as both squads looked as if they left their offense in the locker rooms. With 38 seconds remaining Jose Juan Barea drove the lane putting the rock through the hole and Dallas had a 16-11 lead at the end of the quarter. The two opponents would recover their shooting ability some what during the second and the contest would be tight as the game reached the half with the Mavericks holding a slim 37-35 advantage.
Dallas looked to be on their way to a lopsided victory during the third as Peja Stojakovic buried a 24 foot trey with 2:47 left in the period putting his team on top 64-41. The Rose Garden seemed to be devoid of sound at that moment as the prospect of the Trail Blazers being down 3-1 in the series seemed a very likely scenario but that is when Roy came alive. The guard would drain a trey from 25 feet out with one in the third cutting his team’s deficit heading into the fourth to 67-49.
The Portland star would then lead his team back from the edge of the grave and right back into the contest. He would culminate the comeback with 39 seconds left in the game as he stroked a shot through the twine from nine feet away and scoring the winning hoop at 84-82. The Blazers would out score their visitors 35-15 in completing the amazing rally.
Roy scored 24 points, 5 assists and had 4 rebounds in the Blazers victory. Wesley Matthews added 11 points, 2 assists, a rebound and a steal while Gerald Wallace recorded a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists.
